Alison became interested in this topic due to her own experience with poor balance and dizziness.
Falls have a major impact on the elderly with approximately 30-40% of older adults suffering from at least one fall each year. Falls can lead to injures, activity limitations, fear of falling again and loss of mobility which can have a big impact on independence. There are multiple risk factors for falls, including but not limited to muscle weakness, medication uses, arthritis, incontinence, poor reaction time and balance deficits. Some risk factors we are unable to change but the good news is wen can improve muscle strength and balance.
As we age we see changes in our brain function including decreased sensory integration and balance. But what is balance? Balance is the ability to maintain the body’s centre of mass over its base support. In other words balance keeps us upright. There are 3 main senses that contribute to balance; vestibular (ears), vision (eyes), and proprioception (sensory input that tells your body where it is). If you have ever seen Alison mis judge walking through the door frame and hit her shoulder, you will know her proprioception needs some work. The good news is with training these areas can be improved to help your balance and reduce your risk of falling.
*Please note this is not a regular chiropractic consultant and adjustments will not be performed in this appointment.
