Headaches are the third most common reason people seek chiropractic care. This is because the top three segments in your spine (C1-C3) are the nerve supply to muscles, joints and connective tissue in your neck as well as branches supplying the vertex of the skull and occiput (at the base of your head). There are many trigger points in these muscles supplied by C1-3, which can refer into your head from the temporal region, in a heat band distribution, to the vertex of your head and right around to the base.

How do these areas become so tight?

There are a number of things that can cause a headache and they include:

  • Overuse of your muscles
  • Muscle injury (such as whiplash)
  • Stress
  • Poor posture (particularly common in those who sit at a desk most of the day)
  • Anxiety
  • Food triggers
  • Dehydration
  • Grinding your teeth

How is a headache treated by the Chiropractor?

Our chiropractors use a variety of techniques which include soft tissue therapy to the tight muscles in the upper cervical region of your neck, mobilisation of the joints and a specific chiropractic adjustment to an area in your neck which may be irritated. This adjustment can be a gentle low-force non-manipulative adjustment if you prefer. She can also give you advice on possible triggering factors for you and help you improve your work station, give postural advice and exercises to help combat this common problem.

Two randomized controlled trials dating back to 1995 showed both chiropractic adjustments and soft tissue treatment were effective in reducing cervicogenic headaches (headaches originating in the neck) in both severity and frequency. Another study in 2001 found that the chiropractic adjustment lead to an almost immediate improvement in symptoms for those suffering from a headache originating in the neck.

What things can you do to help the situation?

  • Take a break – if you sit for long periods of time throughout the day, take a break every 30 minutes
  • Exercise
  • If you are prone to stress you may be grinding or clenching your teeth and you may need to have your jaw looked at
  • Drink 2L of water every day
  • Have your spine checked by a Chiropractor

What Causes tension headaches?2021-08-05T12:28:10+09:30

Tension starting in the neck muscles is the reason we have the term “tension headache.”

The muscle at the base of your skull will exert force on your head, causing you to feel pain all across the skull.

How is a tension headache different from a migraine?2021-09-15T15:57:22+09:30
Tension headaches are caused by tight muscles in your head and neck. Migraines, on the other hand, are vascular in origin.
Migraine auras are caused by vasoconstriction (tightening of the blood vessels), and the throbbing headache that follows is caused by vasodilation (widening of the blood vessels).
Migraine headaches are often more severe than ordinary tension headaches, are centered around an eye, and may also be accompanied by side effects such as aura, nausea or vomiting, and sensitivity to light or sound.
Can my headache be caused by restricted joints in my neck?2021-09-15T16:00:12+09:30
Yes, in fact, headaches that are caused by a combination of muscle tightness and joint restrictions are referred to as cervicogenic headaches. These are very common headaches, especially in people who work at a desk.
Dr. Paije and Dr. Alison see these regularly in the clinic and are well equipped in treating them. They are able to work on both muscle tightness and joint restrictions to relieve your headache and neck pain.
How can a chiropractor help with my headache & prevention?2021-09-15T16:01:13+09:30

Our chiropractors can help you by performing gentle spinal manipulation to treat the restricted joints in your neck. We also work on the soft tissues so that your muscles also relax.

This helps restore balance, reduces inflammation, and reduces pain, & sometimes removes the headache all together.

The chiropractor will also be happy to help you learn about headache prevention, such as reducing stress, getting proper sleep, and maintaining good posture.

These methods may help prevent you from getting further headaches in the future. Occasionally some patients will need further treatment if the cause of the headache (such as stress) is not able to be reduced.
