What is Animal Biomechanical Medicine (ABM)?
Dr. Paije Cox
Dr. Paije finished studying Animal Biomechanical Medicine in 2017. We are sure some of you are wondering why?
If you have enjoyed the benefits of chiropractic care personally, surely you may be able to see how it could help anyone with a spine?
The course is offered to Vets, Chiropractors or Osteopaths with clinical experience to further their knowledge.
The most common animals treated are dogs and horses but are not limited to that.
The core principle of ABM is the identification of biomechanical dysfunction anywhere in the body and the application of therapies, most often manually applied by the professional, to return the patient’s body to the best possible function – promoting homeostasis and optimum performance of that individual.
The severity and chronicity of pre-existing pathology will influence the degree of recovery that is possible.
Dr. Paije particularly enjoyed the rehabilitation component of the course, having dogs herself that injure themselves badly, Dr. Paije found the benefits of rehabilitation when she used her golden retriever, Branson as a case for multiple assignments particularly post surgical cruciate rehabilitation.

The main two animals who seek chiropractic treatment are dogs and horses
Horses are treated at the farm where they live and usually require a small call out fee. Dogs on the other hand, are more easily transported and are usually treated at the clinic at designated times outside of human treatment hours.
A standard animal appointment is 30 minutes. However, initial consultation may take 45 minutes to an hour depending on the complexity of the problem
Generally, pet insurance does not cover animal chiropractic treatments. However, there have been some cases where it has been covered.
These cases have mostly been when a veterinarian has performed surgery e.g. for a cranial cruciate ligament rupture repair and prescribed rehabilitation following that surgery at our clinic.
Arthritis or noticeable stiffness is the most common condition we see in the clinic in dogs. We also perform a lot of posts cruciate surgical repair rehabilitation, as well as general treatments for sprains, strains, and lameness.
